Abstract
The project aimed to increase exports to the US market by enhancing the competitiveness of Ethiopian companies. Initial assessments identified challenges in soil quality and limited market access. Implementation focused on three key interventions: market linkage facilitation, infrastructure development, and training for companies looking to export to the US market. The project collaborated with the ILO/MoTI to implement the WRAP certification program, which aimed to enhance the quality of Ethiopian exports. The project also assisted the Ethiopian Chamber of Commerce and Sectoral Associations in organizing a stakeholders meeting to discuss the results of the WRAP pre-audit process. Additionally, the project facilitated participation of Ethiopian companies in a comprehensive survey on demands for development. The project provided assistance to the US Embassy in Ethiopia, including coordinating the visit of the USTR team and delivering company profiles to the Embassy. The project also facilitated a field visit to MAA Garment, one of the best companies in Ethiopia working with VEGA Ethiopia AGOA+. The National AGOA/WTO Business Forum was organized by the VEGA Ethiopia office in collaboration with the WTO Accession Project. The forum dealt with the current status of Ethiopia's AGOA and WTO implementation, providing an opportunity for private sector associations, government offices, and major companies to update the audience on their development undertakings. The project's achievements included a 15% increase in AGOA-related exports from Ethiopia to the US market, growing from USD 15.722 million in 2008 to USD 18.038 million. The project also facilitated the participation of over 200 interested applicants in the Diaspora Direct Investment (DDI) project. The project's impact on the Ethiopian economy was significant, with the export value increasing by USD 8.973 million in 2007. The project's assistance to the US Embassy in Ethiopia and the US trade efforts in sub-Saharan Africa was also notable. The project's achievements were recognized at the National AGOA/WTO Business Forum, where the VEGA Ethiopia office, in collaboration with the WTO Accession Project, organized a business forum that dealt with the current status of Ethiopia's AGOA and WTO implementation. The project's success was attributed to the collaboration between the VEGA Ethiopia AGOA+ project and the ILO/MoTI, as well as the assistance provided to the US Embassy in Ethiopia and the US trade efforts in sub-Saharan Africa.
