Abstract
This initiative was carried out in collaboration with the Instituto de Ciencias para la Familia (ICF) at the Universidad Católica de Honduras. The project's main objective was to generate a space for the dissemination of the family intervention model, which would lead to the configuration of new social narratives regarding the Honduran family and different perspectives on the importance of the systemic model in family intervention, particularly in the Garifuna community. The project's methodology involved the organization of two regional symposia. The first symposium, held on August 16, 2018, in Tegucigalpa, focused on the "Theory and Practice of Family Systems for Prevention at Different Levels of Risk." The second symposium, held on September 26, 2018, in La Ceiba, Atlántida, focused on the "Multigenerational Family in Honduras: Deconstructing Visions." These symposia brought together renowned national and international experts in family mediation and counseling, as well as participants who shared their perspectives through consultations and responses. The symposia aimed to discuss and analyze how Garifuna communities are impacted by migration patterns, modernization pressures, and the weakening of family influence, leading to increased rates of juvenile violence and youth affiliation with gangs and maras. In contrast, the project highlighted the focus on violence prevention from a scientific and academic perspective, which informed Honduras. The symposia resulted in the development of a scientific volume, which was structured into two sections. The first section includes articles by experts on topics such as the family, corresponsabilidad, and the challenges of family intervention. The second section presents the experiences of USAID's Proponte Más project in Garifuna communities in Honduras, including topics such as the multigenerational family, culture, and migration. The project Proponte Más is an expansion of the secondary prevention pilot (Proponte) implemented by USAID in Honduras between 2013 and 2015. The project focuses on providing free family counseling to families with children and adolescents aged 8-17, identified through a risk measurement tool called YSET. The project also validated the YSET tool, which underwent a process of contextualization and adaptation to the Honduran context, in collaboration with the Universidad Estatal de Arizona. The scientific volume resulting from the symposia provides a comprehensive overview of the family intervention model and its results, as well as the experiences of the Proponte Más project in Garifuna communities in Honduras. The volume is a valuable resource for researchers, policymakers, and practitioners working in the field of family intervention and violence prevention.
