Abstract
The primary objective of the workshop was to identify effective strategies for conserving water resources in areas with limited rainfall. Delegates from 15 countries participated in the workshop, representing a range of expertise in water management, hydrology, and environmental science. Key findings from the workshop highlighted the importance of integrated water management approaches that incorporate both supply-side and demand-side measures. Delegates emphasized the need for more efficient irrigation systems, improved water storage infrastructure, and enhanced water reuse and recycling practices. The workshop also underscored the significance of community engagement and participation in water management decision-making processes. Implementation of the workshop recommendations focused on several key areas. In the first instance, a series of training programs was established to equip local water managers with the skills and knowledge necessary to implement sustainable water management practices. These programs included hands-on training in water conservation techniques, as well as workshops on water policy and governance. In addition to training programs, the workshop also emphasized the importance of investing in water infrastructure. Delegates recommended the development of more efficient irrigation systems, including drip irrigation and precision irrigation technologies. Furthermore, the workshop highlighted the need for improved water storage infrastructure, including the construction of reservoirs and other water storage facilities. The geographic focus of the workshop was on arid and semi-arid regions, where water scarcity is a significant challenge. The workshop drew on case studies from several countries, including Australia, South Africa, and India, where innovative water management practices have been implemented to address water scarcity. The workshop's findings and recommendations have been widely disseminated, and have informed water management policies and practices in several countries.
