Abstract
The program began in 2014 with the goal of creating more livable, resilient, and sustainable cities. Initial research conducted in 2015 identified key challenges facing urban areas, including inadequate infrastructure, limited access to basic services, and environmental degradation. A comprehensive assessment of urbanization trends in Asia, Africa, and Latin America revealed that rapid population growth and urbanization are straining city resources. In many cities, inadequate waste management, transportation systems, and energy infrastructure are exacerbating environmental and social problems. The WRI Ross Center's research highlighted the need for integrated urban planning and management approaches that prioritize the needs of low-income and vulnerable populations. The WRI Ross Center's work focuses on several key areas, including urban mobility, waste management, and energy efficiency. In the area of urban mobility, the program has developed a range of initiatives aimed at improving public transportation systems and reducing reliance on private vehicles. These initiatives include the development of bus rapid transit systems, bike-sharing programs, and pedestrian-friendly infrastructure. In the area of waste management, the WRI Ross Center has worked with cities to develop more effective waste collection and disposal systems. This has included the implementation of waste-to-energy technologies, improved recycling programs, and community-based waste management initiatives. The program has also worked to promote energy efficiency in buildings and industries, through the development of green building standards and energy-efficient technologies. The WRI Ross Center's work has been implemented in over 20 cities worldwide, including Bangkok, Jakarta, and Mumbai. The program's research and initiatives have been supported by a range of partners, including governments, private sector companies, and civil society organizations. The WRI Ross Center's goal is to create more sustainable, resilient, and livable cities that benefit all residents, regardless of income or social status.
