Abstract
The project is implemented in partnership with the National Malaria Control Program (NMCP) and the USAID-funded Procurement and Supply Management (PSM) project. The LLIN distribution campaign is implemented in phases, with multiple provinces participating simultaneously. In the second year of the project, the estimated targets for FY18 were revised due to the availability of LLINs. The provinces of Huambo, Cuando Cubango, and Moxico were added to the distribution campaign in Q3, while the provinces of Lunda Norte and Lunda Sul were planned for distribution in Q4. However, the actual distribution in the Lundas is expected to take place in Q1 FY19. The estimated population in 2018 for the provinces participating in the LLIN distribution campaign is approximately 7,038,045, with an estimated 3,910,025 LLINs needed to achieve universal coverage. The estimated number of households, children under 5, and pregnant women in these provinces is also provided. During Q4 FY18, activities related to LLIN mass distribution continued in the provinces of Cuando Cubango and Moxico, and started in the provinces of Lunda Norte and Lunda Sul. The activities implemented in the Lundas during Q4 included meetings with local authorities, opening provincial offices, hiring local LLIN distribution staff, implementing microplanning, and recruiting and training warehouse managers and community health workers on LLIN use counselling and mass distribution information. The table below summarizes the LLIN activities that took place during Q4 FY18: | Province | Activities | July | August | September | | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Cuando Cubango | Meetings and microplanning | X | X | | | Moxico | Meetings and microplanning | X | X | | | Lunda Norte | Meetings and microplanning | | | X | | Lunda Sul | Meetings and microplanning | | | X | The project aims to increase LLIN access and use by at least 30% in the target provinces. The major achievements during Q4 FY18 include the continuation of LLIN mass distribution activities in Cuando Cubango and Moxico, and the initiation of these activities in Lunda Norte and Lunda Sul. The project has made significant progress in preparing for the LLIN distribution campaign in the Lundas, including meetings with local authorities, microplanning, and the recruitment and training of local staff. The project's success in increasing LLIN access and use will have a significant impact on reducing malaria incidence and mortality in the target provinces. The project's efforts to strengthen the capacity of local authorities and health workers will also contribute to the long-term sustainability of the LLIN distribution campaign. The project's progress in Q4 FY18 has laid the foundation for the successful implementation of the LLIN distribution campaign in the Lundas in Q1 FY19. The project's continued efforts to increase LLIN access and use will be critical in achieving the project's overall goal of universal coverage and reducing malaria incidence and mortality in the target provinces.
