Abstract
The survey aimed to assess the reading skills of children in Nigeria, with a focus on identifying the challenges faced by children in reading and understanding English language texts. The survey used a mobile application to administer the reading assessment to children. The application presented a series of reading tasks, including reading aloud, identifying words, and understanding sentences. The tasks were designed to assess the children's ability to read and comprehend English language texts. The survey results showed that a significant proportion of children in Nigeria struggled to read and understand English language texts. The results also highlighted the challenges faced by children in reading and understanding texts in their native languages, including Hausa, Yoruba, and Igbo. The survey used a random number generator to select the texts to be read by the children. The texts were designed to assess the children's ability to read and understand a range of vocabulary and sentence structures. The survey results showed that children who were able to read and understand the texts were more likely to have higher levels of literacy skills. The survey also collected data on the children's ability to understand and respond to questions about the texts they had read. The results showed that children who were able to understand and respond to questions about the texts were more likely to have higher levels of literacy skills. The NEDS 2015 survey provides valuable insights into the reading skills of children in Nigeria and highlights the challenges faced by children in reading and understanding English language texts. The survey results can be used to inform the development of literacy programs and interventions aimed at improving the reading skills of children in Nigeria.
