Abstract
The program focuses on two major result areas: institutionalizing a framework for ALP and increasing the number of learners who are eligible to re-enter the formal school system. The activity requires community understanding and support, with families making decisions about enrollment and support completion, and communities helping create the physical and psychological safety of learners, particularly those who might be in alternative programs. Parent Teacher Associations (PTAs) have been recognized as critical actors in the provision of quality education, and this training program aims to strengthen PTA structure, leadership, and engagement in support of ALP. The training program is designed to promote specific PTA-led activities in support of ALP, with a major innovation being the intentional preparation and implementation of a PTA-led outreach to Traditional Leaders. This "action learning" approach engages PTAs and Traditional Leaders in a dialogue that deepens their understanding of ALP and begins the process of working together. The training program is divided into four days, with each day focusing on specific sessions and topics. Day 1 covers introductory sessions, including an overview of the training, what makes an effective PTA, and an introduction to ALP. Day 2 focuses on preparing students for ALP school, monitoring learner and teacher attendance, and PTAs and the teacher code of conduct. Day 3 covers conducting effective PTA meetings, conflict management, and action planning and preparation for traditional leaders. Day 4 includes a special session on PTAs engaging traditional leaders in support of ALP. The training program is designed to equip PTA leadership with the knowledge and skills necessary to support ALP and promote quality education in their communities. By engaging with Traditional Leaders, PTAs can work together to create a supportive environment for learners and promote the success of ALP. The training program is led by Education Development Center (EDC) under contract to USAID, and is a collaboration with the Ministry of Education. The program is funded by USAID and is part of the Accelerated Quality Education for Liberian Children activity. The program's major result areas are institutionalizing a framework for ALP and increasing the number of learners who are eligible to re-enter the formal school system. The training program's target audience is PTA leadership, and the program is designed to promote specific PTA-led activities in support of ALP. The program's innovation is the intentional preparation and implementation of a PTA-led outreach to Traditional Leaders, which engages PTAs and Traditional Leaders in a dialogue that deepens their understanding of ALP and begins the process of working together.
