Abstract
The program focuses on the Accelerated Learning Program (ALP), which is designed to provide accelerated education to out-of-school children and those who have dropped out of school. The program is implemented in partnership with the Ministry of Education (MoE) and the Government of Liberia (GOL). The program's training cycle is designed to support Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) in their role of promoting accelerated learning programs in schools. The training cycle consists of four days, with each day focusing on specific topics related to promoting safe learning environments and improving attendance of learners and teachers. On Day 1, the training focuses on counties' preparation for the presentation on the status of Cycle 1 Action Plan and highlights of PTA support to ALP to date. The training also covers the introduction to training, where participants are introduced to the training agenda and objectives. On Day 2, the training covers topics such as safe learning environments in Liberia, the role of PTAs in promoting safer learning environments, community engagement in creating a safer learning environment, and PTAs district meeting 1. The training also includes a session on mobilizing resources to improve the learning environment. On Day 3, the training focuses on monitoring teacher and learners attendance, improving teachers and learners attendance, and PTAs district meeting 2. The training also includes a session on action planning, where participants develop strategies for mobilizing resources in the community to support activities that promote safe learning environments. On Day 4, the training focuses on presenting action plans to CEOs and TLs, where participants present their action plans to county education officers and traditional leaders. The training also includes a session on evaluating the effectiveness of the training and identifying areas for improvement. The training is designed to support PTAs in their role of promoting accelerated learning programs in schools. The training focuses on improving attendance of learners and teachers, promoting safe learning environments, and mobilizing resources in the community to support these activities. The training is expected to improve the quality of education in Liberia and increase access to education for out-of-school children and those who have dropped out of school. The training is conducted in six counties, including Bong, Grand Bassa, Montserrado, Margibi, Lofa, and Nimba. The training is facilitated by Education Development Center (EDC) and is supported by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The training is designed to be interactive and participatory, with a focus on building the capacity of PTAs to promote accelerated learning programs in schools. The training outcomes are designed to build on the foundational knowledge, skills, and practices introduced in Cycle 1. The training outcomes include: 1. Participants will be able to describe and share with their colleagues the status of their Cycle 1 Action Plans, completed activities, and results of those activities. 2. Participants will be able to describe the elements of a safe learning environment, the ways in which their schools are safe/unsafe, and how the learning environment affects learner attendance and achievement. 3. Participants will agree on 2-3 activities that the PTA can undertake to involve the community to create a safer learning environment. 4. Participants will develop strategies for mobilizing resources in the community to support these activities. The training is expected to improve the quality of education in Liberia and increase access to education for out-of-school children and those who have dropped out of school. The training is designed to be sustainable and to build the capacity of PTAs to promote accelerated learning programs in schools.
