Grant to International Child Care (ICC) to reduce child mortality in Haiti through an expanded program of immunizations and health education for mothers and the general public.
1985

Abstract
ICC will work with the Ministry of Public Health in implementing the project. ICC will motivate and train existing health institutions to assume responsibility for administering vaccines at the 3,000-someimmunization posts which ICC has previously established throughout the country. ICC will provide training and material support when necessary. For posts in areas unserved by viable health institutions, ICC will install locally based vaccinator/educators to administer vaccines at 4-month intervals. A 10-minute educational activity will take place at each post to teach and motivate mothers to use oral rehydration therapy for children with diarrhea. These messages will be supplemented by other educational interventions aimed at both mothers and the general population (e.g., radio dramas, songs, posters, and literature) similar to those currently used with success in ICC"s tuberculosis campaign. Vaccination targets to be attained by the end of the 3-year project are to: (1) increase national BCG and measles coverage of children 0-5 by 80%, and (2) increase national coverage of 3 doses of DPT to 60%.
