AID agreement no. 674-0301-G-SS-7065-00 with Advice Centers Association for the community outreach and leadership development project

Community advice centers have become increasingly important in apartheid South Africa because of the role they play in informing people of their rights and of potential mechanisms for redress in cases of abuse. The grant will support training of about 60 legally disadvantaged South Africans to become advice center workers. The training program will involve five interrelated components: (1) an initial supervised period of one month in an established advice center; (2) discussion with advice office and ACA staff; (3) theoretical training using worksheets and manuals; (4) a probationary period during which ACA will visit trainees in the field; and (5) participation in specific courses run by the ACA or other community organizations. Funds are also provided to purchase a vehicle for ACA staff and for other travel costs.
