Abstract
grant (PD-FCC-105) to People-to-People Health Foundation, Inc. (Project HOPE) to promote maternal/child health in the highland province of Azuay and the coastal province of Manabi in Ecuador. The project will, in order of descending priority, control diarrheal diseases; strengthen family planning and maternal care; improve maternal and child nutrition; promote Vitamin A; promote immunizations; upgrade provinces" vital statistics reporting systems; and improve the quality of mortality and morbidity data. The project will also include an acute lower respiratory infection intervention, a component not included in the predecessor project. The project will train new and retrain existing community health volunteers (CHVs) and traditional birth attendants (TBAs); provide Ministry of Health auxiliaries with technical and management skills training (including skills needed to train and supervise CHVs/TBAs); and establish groups such as mothers" clubs to address community health concerns.
