Abstract
The project in Guatemala will serve 35,000 people in 100 communities in the departments of Baja Verapaz, Alta Verapaz, Quiche, and Huehuetenango. These departments have the highest concentration of rural Indian populations, are plagued by severe poverty, and have limited basic health services. The project will target children under 3 and women aged 15-44 through interventions in: feeding practices; immunization; oral rehydration therapy; treatment of acute respiratory infections; prenatal, delivery, and postnatal care; AIDS education; and community-based family planning (FP). In addition, CARE will sponsor an AIDS and Child Survival workshop for NGOs. The project in Haiti, called the RICHES project, is an expanded follow-on to an existing locally funded project and will serve 5,550 children under 3 and 11,600 women aged 15-49 in the Grand Anse Region. RICHES staff will train community health volunteers (CHVs) to conduct RICHES days and to make home visits to pass along health messages. The CHVs will weigh and monitor the growth of children and pregnant women and distribute vitamin A and iron supplements; mobilize communities for vaccination campaigns; and promote and distribute selected FP methods. A subgroup of CHVs will promote AIDS prevention and distribute condoms. RICHES will work with village health committees and mothers" clubs to identify health activities they can sustain once RICHES leaves, and provide TA to members in income generation skills which can help to support the activities.
