Abstract
The project targets 10,494 children aged 0-5 and 14,262 women of childbearing age in two districts, Kaiapit and Salamaua. PSI will train two women in each target village to serve their community as birth attendants and to promote and/or carry out and report on child survival interventions: providing prenatal care and information on family planning; instructing mothers in oral rehydration therapy; providing nutrition counseling for mothers and children; and making referrals to Department of Health (DOH) mobile clinics or health posts for vaccinations, high-risk pregnancies, acute respiratory infections, and other serious matters. PSI will also train DOH mobile maternal/child health care teams to supervise the village health attendants and to carry out CS activities. A health education unit will be established in Lae as a primary training center.
