AID cooperative agreement no. OTR-0500-A-00-9130-00 with People-to-People Health Foundation to reduce morbidity and mortality in infants and children in Ecuador

The project will have four main activities. (1) Traditional birth attendants (TBA"s) will be trained to recognize and properly refer pregnant women at risk, and to give advice on child spacing, child nutrition, and particularly on how to access the MSP system for immunizations, oral rehydration therapy, and other maternal/child health needs. (2) Auxiliary nurses will be trained to train, monitor, and support the TBA"s. (3) Collection of vital health statistics will be upgraded through creation of vital statistics committees and training of auxiliary nurses, civil registrars, etc. (4) The project will work to integrate child survival activities. The target population is 12,880 infants, 52,000 children aged 1-4, and 80,000 women of childbearing age.
