Grant to the Center for Socio-Legal Studies (CSLS) to prepare a manual on democracy and voter education for young, historically disadvantaged South Africans.
1993

Abstract
The manual, which will be used in CSLS"s National Street Law Project, will be prepared in collaboration with Lawyers for Human Rights in South Africa and the Washington, D.C.-based National Institution for Citizens Education in Law (NICEL), which will establish an Advisory Board of U.S. scholars in democracy, political science, and constitutional law. In preparing the manual, CSLS will identify organizations already active in the field and gather all training materials produced on democracy and voter education, establish a team of expert consultants to brainstorm the contents of the manual, and, most importantly, conduct research on specific areas. The manual will cover the following topics: the history and forms of democracy; political parties; constitution-making and constitutionalism, separation of powers; the political process of policymaking; administration of the country; parliament; accountability; voting and the role of citizens in the government of the country; and political tolerance.
