Abstract
The training, which was part of a capacity-building program for local NGOs, collectively referred to as PIHI, provided community health workers with the knowledge and skills to promote family planning methods to their communities. Dangou Inoussa, a 50-year-old community health worker from the village of Minanga, was among the participants who underwent this training. Prior to the training, Dangou Inoussa had a large family, with four wives and 22 children. He struggled to provide for his family's basic needs, including food and education, and considered suicide due to the overwhelming burden. However, after learning about various family planning methods during the training, Dangou Inoussa and his wives decided to adopt a family planning method. He credits the training with giving him the knowledge and confidence to convince other men in his village of the benefits of family planning. As a result of the training, Dangou Inoussa has been able to make a positive impact on his community. He has successfully promoted family planning methods to other men in his village, and his story serves as a testament to the effectiveness of the training program. The training was provided by APC Benin, in partnership with PIHI and USAID, as part of a broader effort to improve maternal and child health outcomes in Benin. In addition to Dangou Inoussa's story, another community health worker, a mother from the village of Tchaourou, shares a similar experience of how the training program helped her save her daughter's life. The mother's daughter, Moufidath, was suffering from kwashiorkor, a severe form of malnutrition, due to a poor diet and lack of protein. However, with the guidance and support of the PIHI staff, the mother was able to provide her daughter with the necessary nutrition and treatment, and Moufidath made a full recovery. The success of these stories highlights the importance of training community health workers in family planning and nutrition, and the impact that this training can have on improving health outcomes in rural communities. The training program, which was funded by USAID, has been instrumental in empowering community health workers like Dangou Inoussa and the mother from Tchaourou to make a positive difference in the lives of their communities.
