Abstract
The project was awarded to a consortium led by Population Services International (PSI) in June 2020, with a focus on local capacity building through the New Partnerships Initiative (NPI). The project's start-up phase, which spanned from project inception through March 31, 2021, was marked by a busy and exciting period of launch, engagement with USAID Missions, and development of workplans. Project leadership focused on key start-up deliverables, including recruiting and onboarding a robust project team and liaising with USAID stakeholders and other MOMENTUM suite awards. The project also faced challenges due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, which presented an unusual start-up phase. MPHD's technical focus is centered around four Result Areas: Access to and use of evidence-based, quality maternal, newborn, and child health services, voluntary family planning, and reproductive health care; Capacity of Host-Country institutions, local Organizations, and Providers to Deliver evidence-Based, quality services; Adaptive Learning and use of evidence in MNCH/FP/RH programming; and Cross-sectoral collaboration and innovative partnerships between MNCH/FP/RH and non-MNCH/FP/RH organizations. The project has made significant progress in its first year, with a focus on building foundational elements to deliver on MOMENTUM's four Result Areas. This includes the development of workplans with deep focus on local capacity building through the New Partnerships Initiative (NPI), engagement with USAID Missions to co-create field buy-ins, and the launch of innovative Year 1 core activities. The project has also established a robust project team and has begun to engage with stakeholders and other MOMENTUM suite awards to engender collaborative and effective approaches to accelerating reductions in maternal, newborn, and child morbidity and mortality, and increasing access to and quality of voluntary family planning and reproductive health care. MPHD has also made progress in building foundational elements to deliver on MOMENTUM's four Result Areas, including the establishment of a Community of Practice (CoP) to facilitate knowledge sharing and collaboration among project stakeholders. The project has also developed a comprehensive Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) plan to track progress and identify areas for improvement. In addition to these accomplishments, MPHD has also established partnerships with various organizations, including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the World Health Organization, and the United Nations Population Fund. These partnerships are aimed at leveraging resources and expertise to support the project's goals and objectives. Overall, MPHD has made significant progress in its first year, with a focus on building foundational elements to deliver on MOMENTUM's four Result Areas. The project's progress and accomplishments highlight its commitment to expanding access to and use of high-quality, evidence-based maternal, newborn, and child health services, voluntary family planning, and reproductive health care through the private sector.
