Abstract
The study focused on 8 selected food products, including staple food products such as sugar, chicken, and maize flour, as well as processed food products like baked beans and tuna. Prices for these products were collected from 3 cross-border supermarkets: SPAR, Shoprite, and Game. The average retail price in Nelspruit was found to be lower for all products and all brands, even in the same supermarket chain. Price differences for identical products ranged from as high as 53% for Sunfoil canola oil to as low as 16% for Iwissa maize flour. The size of the price difference did not appear to be related to whether the product was a staple commodity or was processed. The prices of staple food products in Maputo were compared to those in Nelspruit. The average price of chicken in Maputo was 145.00 MT, while in Nelspruit it was 82.77 MT, resulting in a price difference of 42.9%. The average price of sugar in Maputo was 53.33 MT, while in Nelspruit it was 27.57 MT, resulting in a price difference of 48.3%. Maize flour prices in Maputo averaged 37.50 MT, while in Nelspruit they averaged 22.00 MT, resulting in a price difference of 41.3%. Processed food products also showed significant price differences between Maputo and Nelspruit. The average price of tomato paste in Maputo was 73.02 MT, while in Nelspruit it was 41.25 MT, resulting in a price difference of 43.5%. The average price of baked beans in Maputo was 39.14 MT, while in Nelspruit it was 23.72 MT, resulting in a price difference of 39.4%. When prices were calculated exclusive of VAT, the results showed similar patterns of price differences between Maputo and Nelspruit. The average price of chicken in Maputo was 123.93 MT, while in Nelspruit it was 72.61 MT, resulting in a price difference of 41.4%. The average price of sugar in Maputo was 45.58 MT, while in Nelspruit it was 24.18 MT, resulting in a price difference of 46.9%. The study's findings suggest that there are significant price variations between Nelspruit and Maputo for various food products. These price differences are not related to whether the product is a staple commodity or is processed. Further analysis is needed to understand the underlying causes of these price variations and their implications for consumers and businesses in the region.
