Abstract
The program is being implemented in the region of Gofo de Tribugá, where Solimar International is providing support to communities in Joví, Coqui, Termales, and Playa Blanca to improve their tourism offerings. The project is funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) through the BIOREDD+ Project, task order number AID-514-TO-11-00002. To support the development of the tourism industry in the region, Solimar International has developed a course on operations and management for tourism businesses. The course is designed to provide participants with the skills and knowledge needed to manage their businesses effectively and provide high-quality services to tourists. The course is based on a methodology developed by Solimar International, which has been tested in several countries in Latin America and the Caribbean with positive results. The course has several objectives, including: 1. To strengthen participants' knowledge of good practices and responsible tourism, which will have a direct impact on the conservation of natural resources and the quality of their tours. 2. To improve customer service and the quality of their products, contributing to the development of the Chocó region as a high-quality tourist destination. 3. To strengthen participants' knowledge of pricing and financial procedures to ensure better control of their business growth. 4. To teach participants how to manage and train their staff to ensure high-quality service in their tours. The course consists of several chapters, including: 1. Introduction to Sustainable Tourism: This chapter discusses the definitions of ecotourism and sustainable tourism, their economic, environmental, and social objectives, and the differences between ecotourism, traditional tourism, and local tourism. 2. Policy of Responsible Tourism: This chapter discusses the Global Criteria for Sustainable Tourism, which will help participants apply best practices to their own sites, and provides examples of how businesses can follow these criteria to develop a responsible tourism policy. 3. Customer Service: This chapter discusses the importance of customer service in tourism, the need for all personnel to provide good customer service, and the potential negative impacts of poor customer service. 4. Good Practices of Sustainable Tourism: This chapter discusses how to mitigate the environmental impact of various tourism activities, including interaction with wildlife, communities, vehicles, construction and infrastructure, and activities on land. The course also includes a manual of operations, which participants will develop based on the topics covered in the course. The manual should include the good practices of sustainable tourism discussed in the course, as well as any other relevant information. The course has been implemented in the Chocó region, where it has been well received by participants. The course has helped participants to improve their knowledge and skills in areas such as customer service, financial management, and staff training, and has contributed to the development of the tourism industry in the region. Overall, the course on operations and management for tourism businesses is an important component of the BIOREDD+ Program, which aims to reduce emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in the region of Gofo de Tribugá. The course has been designed to provide participants with the skills and knowledge needed to manage their businesses effectively and provide high-quality services to tourists, while also contributing to the development of the tourism industry in the region.
