Abstract
The diagnosis was conducted in June 2013 and was prepared by Miguel Macedo Bravo for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The project is implemented by a consortium of organizations, including the Amazon Conservation Team (ACT), the Coordinadora de las Organizaciones Indígenas de la Cuenca Amazónica (COICA), and the Centro de Conservación, Investigación y Manejo de Áreas Naturales (CIMA). The diagnosis focused on understanding the social and economic context of the communities participating in the NZD project. The study involved a mapping of uses and strengths (MUF) of the communities, which aimed to identify their needs, capacities, and relationships with the Parque Nacional Cordillera Azul (PNCAZ). The MUF was conducted in 2011-2012 and involved a series of sessions with community members to gather information on their demographics, organization, and relationships with the PNCAZ. The study identified several key findings, including the importance of community organization and participation in the conservation of the PNCAZ. The study also highlighted the need for capacity building and technical assistance to support community-led conservation efforts. Additionally, the study identified the need for improved communication and coordination between community members, organizations, and government agencies to ensure effective implementation of the NZD project. The diagnosis also provided recommendations for the work with each of the communities participating in the NZD project. For example, the study recommended that the community of Nativa Chambira focus on developing its organizational capacity and improving its relationships with the PNCAZ. Similarly, the study recommended that the community of Alto Jorge Chávez focus on developing its economic capacity and improving its access to markets. The study also provided a general analysis of the information gathered from the MUF, highlighting the importance of community-led conservation and the need for improved communication and coordination between community members, organizations, and government agencies. The study concluded that the NZD project has the potential to contribute to the conservation of the PNCAZ and the improvement of the livelihoods of the communities participating in the initiative. The study also analyzed the information gathered from the MUF in the subsector Tres Unidos, which included the community of Santa Rosa de Huayai. The study identified several key findings, including the importance of community organization and participation in the conservation of the PNCAZ. The study also highlighted the need for capacity building and technical assistance to support community-led conservation efforts. Overall, the diagnosis provided a comprehensive understanding of the social and economic context of the communities participating in the NZD project. The study identified several key findings and recommendations, which can inform the implementation of the project and contribute to the conservation of the PNCAZ and the improvement of the livelihoods of the communities participating in the initiative.
