Abstract
The project is designed to address the main learning needs of internally displaced children and host learners affected by the crisis in North Eastern Nigeria by establishing Non-formal Learning Centers (NFLCs), Youth Learning Centers (YLCs), and Adolescent Girls Learning Centers (AGLCs). These alternative educational opportunities are carried out in church schools, community centers, formal schools, and other available alternate learning centers. The project focuses on improving quality and relevant instructional practices by updating and developing teaching-learning materials for literacy, numeracy, life skills, social and emotional learning (SEL) competencies, and psychosocial support services. It also recruits, trains, and mentors Learning Facilitators (LFs) to provide quality instruction and ensures Technical Working Groups (TWGs) are involved in making teaching-learning materials available to NFLCs. The project generates community support by raising awareness to help targeted educational centers (NFE and alternative education learning centers) provide educational opportunities, improve the value placed on education, and encourage IDP and host community girls, boys, and youth to sustain their education. The project collaborates with state and local government authorities and civil society to support NFE and alternative education options, ensuring government funding and resources are allocated to support the project's objectives. The project also works within host communities who have taken Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) into their homes and in communities where IDPs live in temporary settlement-type housing. This approach enables the project to reach a wider audience and provide support to those in need. The project's geographic coverage includes Adamawa, Bauchi, and Gombe states, with a focus on establishing a network of NFLCs, YLCs, and AGLCs across these regions. The project's major counterpart organizations include State Ministries of Education (SMOE), State Agencies for Mass Education (SAME), State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMA), State Universal Basic Education Boards (SUBEB), and 14 Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs) sub-grantees. The project's implementation is led by Creative Associates International, with sub-awardees including the International Rescue Committee and Florida State University. The project's duration is from April 1 to June 30, 2015, with a focus on establishing a sustainable and effective education system for internally displaced children and host learners in North Eastern Nigeria.
