Abstract
The activity is funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and aims to increase the productivity and profitability of horticulture value chains while integrating large numbers of women and youth and improving the nutritional status of Tanzanians. The activity's purpose is achieved through the scaling of nutrition-sensitive improved technologies and practices that lead to increased productivity of women, men, and youth. Additionally, the activity aims to scale market system improvements that increase the incomes of smallholder farmers and improve the availability of nutritious food for Tanzanians. The FTFT-MnM activity is implemented by Fintrac Inc. and has several subcontractors, including the Tanzania Horticultural Association (TAHA), Zanzibar Economic Empowerment Fund (ZEEF), Tanzania Growth Trust (TGT), and several other organizations. The geographic coverage of the activity includes the regions of Morogoro, Iringa, Songwe, and Mbeya, as well as the Zanzibar islands of Unguja and Pemba. The activity's results are measured through a variety of indicators, including the number of farmers trained in improved agricultural practices, the number of farmers who have increased their income, and the number of households that have improved their nutrition. The activity also focuses on integrating large numbers of women and youth into the horticulture value chain. The FTFT-MnM activity has made significant progress in its first three years. The activity has trained over 10,000 farmers in improved agricultural practices, and over 50% of these farmers have reported an increase in their income. Additionally, the activity has helped to improve the nutrition of over 100,000 households. The activity's implementation is ongoing, and the next quarter will focus on continuing to scale the improved technologies and market systems that have been developed. The activity will also continue to focus on integrating large numbers of women and youth into the horticulture value chain. The FTFT-MnM activity has a number of partners, including local governments, NGOs, and private sector companies. The activity is also supported by the Southern Agricultural Growth Corridor of Tanzania (SAGCOT) and the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA). The activity's financial performance is also strong, with the project having spent over 80% of its budget. The project has also received positive feedback from stakeholders, including farmers, traders, and government officials. The FTFT-Mboga na Matunda activity is a key component of the Feed the Future program, which aims to reduce poverty and improve food security in Tanzania. The activity's success will depend on the continued support of the USAID, the Government of Tanzania, and other stakeholders. The activity's results will be evaluated through a variety of metrics, including the number of farmers who have increased their income, the number of households that have improved their nutrition, and the number of women and youth who have been integrated into the horticulture value chain. The FTFT-MnM activity has a number of challenges, including the need to scale up the improved technologies and market systems that have been developed. The activity will also need to continue to engage with local stakeholders to ensure that the project is aligned with their needs and priorities. The activity's long-term impact will depend on the ability of the activity to sustain its results and ensure that the improvements made are sustained over time.
