Abstract
The objective of environmental education is to increase awareness among the world's population to be more mindful, care for, and protect the environment and its problems. In the Bird's Head Seascape, a region in West Papua, Indonesia, environmental education is a crucial component of the Blue Abadi Initiative, a program aimed at conserving the area's unique biodiversity through the empowerment of local society. The Blue Abadi Fund utilizes financial resources to ensure that marine ecosystems and species in the Bird's Head Seascape are sustainably managed and protected by local environmental stewards, providing benefits to local communities. The assessment of the environmental education program in the Bird's Head Seascape was conducted through a qualitative research method, which involved data collection, data reduction and categorization, data processing, and conclusion. The assessment aimed to identify the best model for environmental education in the area, with the ultimate goal of producing a valuable recommendation for the Blue Abadi Fund to achieve its target in relation to future Blue Abadi Fund programs. Twenty-one contacts of implementers and supporters of environmental education in the Bird's Head Seascape were identified, including Conservation International Indonesia, MORA – Molo Ombin Raja Ampat, RARCC – Raja Ampat Research and Conservation Center, and YNP – Yayasan Nazareth Papua. These organizations have been involved in various environmental education initiatives, such as developing Ridge to Reef environmental education modules, conducting training programs, and implementing community-based conservation projects. The assessment revealed that the environmental education program in the Bird's Head Seascape has been successful in increasing awareness and knowledge among local communities about the importance of marine conservation. However, challenges remain, including limited resources, inadequate infrastructure, and a lack of coordination among stakeholders. To address these challenges, the assessment recommends the establishment of a dedicated institution to oversee the implementation of environmental education programs in the area. The Blue Abadi Fund has the potential to play a key role in supporting the implementation of environmental education activities in the Bird's Head Seascape, particularly those related to marine protection and conservation. By providing financial resources and technical assistance, the Blue Abadi Fund can help to strengthen the management of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and conservation efforts through the delivery of effective marine environmental education activities and outreach programs. Overall, the assessment highlights the importance of environmental education in the Bird's Head Seascape and the need for a coordinated and sustainable approach to conservation efforts in the area. By working together, stakeholders can help to protect the unique biodiversity of the Bird's Head Seascape and promote the well-being of local communities.
