Abstract
The project focuses on integrating nutrition into value chains, with a particular emphasis on the dairy sector. The project's overall goal is to improve the nutritional status of Malawian households, particularly those in rural areas. The project is implemented by DAI and its partners, including the Malawi INVC project, the American Poultry Association, and the Michigan State University (MSU) International Agriculture and Nutrition Program. The project's activities are divided into three components: Advancing Value Chain Competitiveness, Improving Productivity, and Improving Community Capacity to Prevent Under-Nutrition. The Advancing Value Chain Competitiveness component focuses on increasing access to markets, value chain efficiency, and access to credit and finance. This is achieved through a range of activities, including market development and marketing support, industry association strengthening, and capacity building for smallholder farmers. The component also includes tasks aimed at improving access to post-harvest handling and storage options, facilitating linkages between lending institutions and smallholders, and building agricultural policy advocacy and dialogue capacity. The Improving Productivity component focuses on improving access to quality seed and other agro-inputs, increasing access to new technology and management practices, and improving access to effective advisory extension services and information. This is achieved through a range of activities, including seed supply strengthening, seed distribution system expansion, and technology transfer through firm-level and association assistance. The component also includes tasks aimed at improving access to effective best bet production technologies and management practices, improving access to proven management practices in the dairy sector, and establishing demonstration farms for hands-on training. The Improving Community Capacity to Prevent Under-Nutrition component focuses on improving key nutrition-related behaviors within households, particularly in rural areas. This is achieved through a range of activities, including determining factors that influence nutrition and feeding practices, and developing and implementing nutrition education programs. The component also includes tasks aimed at promoting conservation agriculture and other resilient agricultural practices, developing an environmental management and monitoring plan, and improving access to effective advisory extension services and information. The project's results framework outlines the expected outcomes and indicators for each component and task. The framework includes indicators such as the number of smallholder farmers trained in market development and marketing, the number of households with improved access to quality seed and other agro-inputs, and the number of households with improved nutrition-related behaviors. The project's progress is monitored and reported on a quarterly basis. The fourth quarterly report for FY2013 covers the period from 1st July 2013 to 30th September 2013. The report highlights the progress made in each component and task, including the number of smallholder farmers trained, the number of households with improved access to quality seed and other agro-inputs, and the number of households with improved nutrition-related behaviors. The report also includes a summary of the project's achievements and challenges during the quarter, as well as recommendations for future action. The report is intended for review by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and other stakeholders.
