Abstract
The project aimed to improve the competitiveness and sustainability of the Ghanaian poultry industry by enhancing the capacity of producer groups, cooperatives, and trade associations. Collaboration with other projects and engagement with the Government of Ghana were key components of the project's administration. Capacity building was a primary focus of the project, with activities aimed at improving the regulatory framework, trade associations, and financial services. The project supported the development of new financial products for the poultry sector, improved the ability of financial institutions to assess risk and return, and facilitated access to financing for poultry value chain actors. Additionally, the project strengthened veterinary services and access to inputs, including the development of the community animal health worker model and harmonization of national poultry vaccination schedules. Market access was also a key area of focus, with activities aimed at facilitating buyer-seller relationships and improving market intelligence. The project established linkages between buyers and sellers, supported commerce and ICT adoption, and coordinated stakeholder marketing forums and committees. Training was another critical component of the project, with activities aimed at improving agricultural production techniques, capacity building, and business development services. The project supported the delivery of sustainable business development services for poultry farms, strengthened managerial capacity, and facilitated business model innovation and diversification. The project's geographic focus was on Ghana, with a specific emphasis on the poultry industry. The project's timeframes were from October 1, 2017, to March 31, 2018, with a midterm evaluation conducted in May 2018. Recommendations for future projects included the need for continued support for the poultry industry, particularly in the areas of capacity building, financial services, and market access. The project's implementation details and activities were designed to improve the competitiveness and sustainability of the Ghanaian poultry industry, with a focus on enhancing the capacity of producer groups, cooperatives, and trade associations.
