Abstract
Approximately 200,000 people are estimated to be displaced, with an affected population of around 3 million individuals. The U.N. has reported that 95 metric tons of high-energy biscuits are available in Haiti, with the World Food Program working to distribute them to affected populations. The WFP has also concluded the purchase of 2.2 million meals. International urban search and rescue teams have completed reconnaissance in 100 percent of assigned areas in Port-au-Prince, with search and rescue activities continuing until the Government of Haiti decides to cease operations. As of January 18, U.S. urban search and rescue teams had rescued approximately 40 individuals from collapsed buildings, including one girl two years of age. International USAR teams have rescued more than 70 individuals throughout Port-au-Prince, an unprecedented tally for a five-day USAR operation. The U.S. Department of Defense has approved the transfer of 16 million U.S. meals ready-to-eat (MREs) as an additional contribution to the World Food Program. The DoD is preparing the MREs for shipment to Haiti, in addition to 300 rolls of plastic sheeting, which will meet the shelter needs of 15,000 people. The U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is finalizing a contribution of approximately 1.5 million MREs to the WFP, combined with 600,000 humanitarian daily rations previously committed by the U.S. Government. Humanitarian organizations in Haiti report that roads remain difficult to transit, particularly as displaced populations are living on the streets, preventing trucks carrying relief and food supplies from reaching distribution sites. However, relief organizations continue to deliver an increased amount of assistance each day, in coordination with the Government of Haiti and the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH). The U.N. Logistics Cluster has requested that the Government of the Dominican Republic establish a humanitarian hub in Barahona as an alternate for channeling humanitarian relief cargo from Santo Domingo to Haiti.
