Abstract
The importance of project management in the health sector continues to see growth, with a projected value of $22.5 trillion by 2025. Globally, project demand continues to rise, with GDP contributions from project-oriented industries expected to reach $32 trillion by 2030. The need for professionalism in the implementation of healthcare projects cannot be overemphasized, as organizations waste up to $97 million for every $1 billion spent on projects. Healthcare organizations are fast realizing that excelling at project management has a direct impact on their growth and survival. The healthcare industry has initiated and completed projects, but not always using formal project management techniques. New technologies, health reform, evidence-based medicine, health networks, patient-centered care, medical homes, and improved patient experience are transforming the healthcare landscape, and where there is change, there are projects. The rate of change, combined with a growing interest in applying business best practices from other industries to healthcare, has prompted the healthcare industry to examine its project management practices. The primary goal of effective healthcare project management is to enhance the success rate of such projects. This involves applying modern project management techniques, embracing program and portfolio management, and developing skills in project selection and management. The framework for successful healthcare projects includes ten project management knowledge areas: project integration, scope, schedule, cost, quality, human resource, communications, risk, procurement, and stakeholder management. Additionally, there are five project management process groups: initiating, planning, executing, monitoring and controlling, and closing. These process groups are applied in a consistent, structured manner to increase the likelihood of project success. The application of these process groups involves progressing from initiating activities to planning activities, executing activities, monitoring and controlling activities, and closing activities. All projects make use of these five process groups, which are essential for achieving project objectives and delivering business benefits. The healthcare industry stands to gain from effective healthcare project management, including improved project outcomes, enhanced stakeholder satisfaction, and increased competitiveness. To remain competitive, healthcare organizations must develop skills in project selection and management, and be familiar with and employ modern project management techniques. This unit aims to point out to learners what the healthcare industry stands to gain from effective healthcare project management and how the success rate of such projects can be enhanced. Healthcare projects differ in size, cost, and complexity, but they all must follow the same framework to succeed. This framework provides a structured approach to project management, which is essential for achieving project objectives and delivering business benefits. The application of this framework involves applying the ten project management knowledge areas and the five project management process groups in a consistent and structured manner. The healthcare industry is facing significant challenges, including new technologies, health reform, evidence-based medicine, health networks, patient-centered care, medical homes, and improved patient experience. These challenges require healthcare organizations to develop skills in project selection and management, and be familiar with and employ modern project management techniques.
