The Ministry of Health and Social Welfare of the Republic of Liberia developed a module on mental health in 2009 for health workers in clinical areas as part of the Basic Package of Health Services.
154 pages

Abstract
The module aims to equip health workers with the necessary skills and knowledge to provide mental health services, including counseling, assessment, and medication management. The module covers various topics, including an overview of mental health, depression and anxiety disorders, psychosomatic symptoms, acute mental illnesses, and substance abuse. It also includes sessions on trauma counseling, domestic violence, and sexual violence. The module emphasizes the importance of a strong network of institutionalized and community-based mental health programs to maintain patients' ability to function independently. Physicians, nurses, certified midwives, physician assistants, and pharmacists will receive in-service training to develop their competencies in managing mentally ill patients at the health facility level. These health workers will provide initial physical care, manage mental health emergencies, counsel, and refer patients with mental health danger signs to the next level of healthcare. The module includes a facilitator's guide for each session, which outlines the content, goals, objectives, methods, and activities. The facilitator's guide also provides instructions for implementing small-group activities, such as role-playing and brainstorming, to increase participants' knowledge and skills. The module uses various training methods, including brainstorming, working in small groups, demonstrations, case studies, and role-playing. These methods are designed to facilitate learning and provide participants with opportunities to practice new skills in a safe and supportive environment. Before beginning the training, facilitators should accomplish several tasks, including welcoming and introducing participants, establishing group rules, and asking participants to discuss their hopes, fears, and expectations. This helps create a positive and inclusive learning environment. The module is designed to be comprehensive and cost-effective, providing health workers with the necessary tools and knowledge to provide high-quality mental health services. By equipping health workers with the skills and knowledge to manage mental health conditions, the module aims to improve health outcomes and reduce the burden of mental illness in Liberia.
