Abstract
This has resulted in poor coverage of the education system. A key factor determining a student's admittance into higher education programs is the ICFES state exam, which tests areas such as reading comprehension, math, and science. In 2007, only 35% of graduating high school students in the department of Magdalena went on to enroll in higher education programs. CIMIENTOS, in collaboration with the Municipal Secretariat of Education, implemented a program to help students improve their ICFES results. The program focuses on preparing students in the areas tested, providing practice material, and equipping teachers with the necessary tools to analyze and strengthen areas where students need improvement. Mock tests are administered a few months prior to the actual ICFES exam, giving students the opportunity to practice their test-taking skills and evaluate their results. In August, over 1,000 11th-grade students in Fundación participated in mock exams in preparation for the September ICFES exam. Seven educational institutes from the municipality of Fundación, including students from rural areas, took part in the program. The mock tests provided students with a chance to practice time management, which is one of the most challenging aspects of taking state exams. The ICFES program aims to increase students' chances of being accepted into universities or vocational programs. By providing students with the necessary tools and resources, the program seeks to improve their performance in the ICFES exam. The program's focus on rural areas is particularly important, as these regions often face greater challenges in accessing education. The mock ICFES exams have been well-received by students, with some expressing appreciation for the opportunity to practice their test-taking skills. The program's impact on students' performance in the ICFES exam will be closely monitored, with the goal of increasing the number of students who go on to enroll in higher education programs.
