Abstract
This region's living conditions are precarious due to damage caused by water and the elevation of the Rio Atrato, as well as the dense rainforest that makes the territory difficult to navigate. As a result, schools in this region have substandard facilities due to dilapidation. The economy of this region is poor, leading to a lack of resources to provide basic services such as education and healthcare to citizens. In the municipality of Acandí, the Elementary School Diego Luis Córdoba faced significant challenges due to its limited number of classrooms. Classes were often held outdoors, and heavy rainfall would cause children to miss school due to the insufficient number of classrooms. To address this issue, CIMIENTOS facilitated the construction of five new classrooms and one sanitary unit. The project was completed in September, allowing over 150 children to attend class regularly, regardless of the weather conditions. The new sanitary unit is a significant improvement over the existing bathroom facilities, which were often cesspools of bacteria causing disease and illness among children who used them. With the new facilities, students at Diego Luis Córdoba will have access to basic sanitation services, promoting healthy livelihoods. CIMIENTOS' strategy to improve educational coverage for the most vulnerable populations, including Afro-Colombians, is a key component of this project. By providing adequate facilities for the Elementary School Diego Luis Córdoba, CIMIENTOS aims to improve educational quality and increase permanence in the school system. This project is part of a broader effort to address the educational needs of the Bajo and Medio Atrato Region, where poverty and limited resources have historically hindered access to quality education. The construction of new classrooms and sanitary facilities is a critical step towards achieving this goal. The completion of this project marks a significant milestone in the efforts to improve educational infrastructure in the Bajo and Medio Atrato Region. With the new facilities in place, students at Diego Luis Córdoba will have a safer and more conducive learning environment, setting them up for success in their academic pursuits. This project serves as a model for future initiatives aimed at improving educational quality and access in this region.
