Abstract
The IPS is guided by five key goals, which are institutional and fiscal integrity, political and electoral system integrity, social attitudes that reinforce democratic systems, informational integrity, and human rights. Institutional and fiscal integrity is a critical component of the IPS, with a focus on strengthening public accountability in finance and budget, improving public sector fiscal transparency and access to information, and enhancing anti-corruption prevention and enforcement. The IPS also aims to promote integrity of electoral systems and processes, public participation in policy and decision-making, and civic engagement grounded in democratic principles. The IPS places significant emphasis on promoting social attitudes that reinforce democratic systems, including supporting emerging leaders among youth, women, and minorities, promoting accountability for religious persecution and discrimination, and expanding people-to-people exchanges and networking. Additionally, the IPS aims to strengthen civic engagement grounded in democratic principles, promote media literacy and information integrity safeguards, and support targeted, in-depth investigative journalism. The IPS also seeks to strengthen human rights, including fundamental freedoms and monitoring of religious persecution. The initiative is guided by a results framework that outlines specific objectives and outcomes, including public accountability in finance and budget, investment and project safeguards, and labor-rights protection. Implementation of the IPS is being carried out through various programs and activities, including the Indo-Pacific Transparency Initiative (IPTI). The IPTI is a key component of the IPS, aimed at promoting transparency and accountability in the Indo-Pacific region. The IPTI works to strengthen public sector fiscal transparency and access to information, promote integrity of electoral systems and processes, and support civic engagement grounded in democratic principles. The IPTI has made significant progress in FY 2021, with notable achievements in strengthening public sector fiscal transparency and access to information, promoting integrity of electoral systems and processes, and supporting civic engagement grounded in democratic principles. The initiative has also made progress in promoting media literacy and information integrity safeguards, supporting targeted, in-depth investigative journalism, and strengthening human rights. Overall, the IPS and IPTI are critical components of the US government's efforts to promote democratic values and principles in the Indo-Pacific region. The initiatives aim to strengthen institutional and fiscal integrity, promote social attitudes that reinforce democratic systems, and support human rights, ultimately contributing to a more stable and prosperous region.
