Abstract
is the owner of the Montelimar sugar mill, a company that produces sugar, molasses, and energy with a focus on environmental and social responsibility. The company operates one of four sugar mills in Nicaragua, spanning 7,065 hectares in the municipalities of the Nicaraguan Pacific coast. Montelimar employs approximately 3,200 workers during the sugar harvest and has 2,800 permanent employees. The company is committed to corporate social responsibility, adhering to principles that include complying with national laws, implementing activities with transparency, and promoting stakeholder participation. As part of this approach, Montelimar has executed literacy campaigns for agricultural workers, eradicated child labor, supported housing-building efforts, and administered a natural reserve. The company's commitment to social responsibility has led to the adoption of an HIV policy aimed at workers and the population in its areas of influence. The HIV policy was implemented in March 2015, under the leadership of the Private-Enterprise Superior Council's –COSEP– and with technical assistance from USAID|PASCA LMG. The policy involves incorporating HIV issues into the initial guidance provided by the Human Resources Management to all workers at the production plant and the fields, starting with the 2014-2015 sugar harvest. This process includes sharing basic HIV information, promoting testing, teaching how to use condoms correctly, and educating workers about sexual-transmitted diseases and family planning. The goal of the policy is to equip each worker with the knowledge needed to make informed decisions and prevent HIV, and to encourage them to share this knowledge with others. The policy's implementation is a key component of Montelimar's commitment to corporate social responsibility and its efforts to promote the health and well-being of its workers and the surrounding community. Montelimar's HIV policy is part of a broader effort to promote health and education among its workers and the population in its areas of influence. The company's commitment to social responsibility and its efforts to address critical health issues such as HIV/AIDS demonstrate its dedication to creating a positive impact on the communities it serves.
