Abstract
This is evident in the presentation by Dr. Ndala Booker and Dr. Onesimus Otieno, which highlights the importance of critical thinking in education and its application in the agricultural sector. The presentation was delivered to the Network for Agricultural Technical Education in Nigeria (NATEN) and the Association of Deans of Agriculture in Nigerian Universities (ADAN). The purpose of teaching critical thinking is to equip students with the ability to analyze and evaluate information, making informed decisions in both their personal and professional lives. According to Dr. Booker and Dr. Otieno, strong educators practice critical thinking, and it is essential for students to develop this skill to succeed in their future careers. In fact, up to 85 percent of the jobs that today's college students will have in 11 years have not been invented yet, emphasizing the need for adaptability and critical thinking. Critical thinking is a life skill that enables individuals to think logically and solve problems effectively. It is an asset across various careers and personal life, and it is what is required in today's times and workplace. Moreover, critical thinking promotes creativity and innovation, enhances language and presentation skills, and is essential for making informed decisions. Dr. Booker and Dr. Otieno define critical thinking as reasonable, reflective thinking focused on deciding what to believe or do, as well as metacognitive-reflective thinking, which involves thinking about thinking to make it better. The presentation highlights the need for critical thinkers in the agricultural sector, where logical thinking and problem-solving are essential for making informed decisions. Critical thinking is necessary for evaluating information, identifying patterns, and making informed decisions. In the context of agricultural programs, critical thinking enables students to analyze data, evaluate research, and develop effective solutions to complex problems. By integrating critical thinking into agricultural programs, tertiary education institutions can equip students with the skills necessary to succeed in the rapidly changing agricultural sector. The presentation emphasizes the importance of critical thinking in today's world, where the ability to think logically and solve problems effectively is essential for success. By developing critical thinking skills, students can adapt to new situations, make informed decisions, and contribute to the growth and development of the agricultural sector. The integration of critical thinking into agricultural programs is a crucial step towards preparing students for the challenges of the 21st century.
