2021 · 10 pages

Abstract
The assessment is part of the Accelerated Quality Education for Liberian Children program, which is funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) through the Access IDIQ Contract AID-OAA-I-14-00073/AID-669-TO-17-00001. The reading passage, titled "Lazy Anansi," is a story about a spider named Anansi who is too lazy to cook his own food. Instead, he visits his friends and eats the food they cook. Anansi comes up with a plan to spin a web and tie one end to his leg and one end to the pot of food, so that when the food is ready, the other animals can pull on the web string to let him know. However, when the food is ready, all the animals start pulling on the web string at the same time, causing Anansi's legs to stretch and eventually snap. The scoring sheet includes a blank page for the student to read the story and answer comprehension questions. The questions assess the student's understanding of the story, including Anansi's problem, what Rabbit was cooking, how the other animals let Anansi know the food was ready, why the animals kept tugging on the web, and why Anansi felt embarrassed. The scoring sheet also includes a table for calculating scores, which categorizes the number of correct items into percentage ranges. The table is used to determine the percentage correct for each section of the assessment, with 50% correct in each section indicating that the student has passed level 3. The assessment is designed to evaluate the reading comprehension skills of Liberian children and to provide a measure of their understanding of the story. The results of the assessment can be used to inform instruction and to identify areas where students may need additional support.
