Abstract
These individuals are between 10 and 24 years old and identify as Miskito, Mestizo, Rama, Ulwa (Mayangna), and Kriol, with diverse socio-economic conditions and facing various risk situations in their communities and/or neighborhoods. Participation by sex and ethnic identity shows a higher inclusion of women (51% of the total) and a greater involvement of indigenous and Afro-descendant adolescents and young people (60% of the total) during the 2013-2017 period. This represents a specific action towards gender and ethnic equity in a region that is adverse to such initiatives. The majority of the mothers (49% of the total) of adolescents and young people integrated into EDUEXITO exercise the headship of the households where they live, indicating that they have predominance in the decisions that affect the lives of their members, at the social and economic level. This is also an indicator of the high percentage of absence of fathers in these families, mainly due to abandonment of their families and, to a lesser extent, migration to other municipalities or outside the country in search of better job opportunities. The family nuclear family composed of father, mother, and children is the one that predominates in the households of adolescents and young people integrated into EDUEXITO (47% of the total of families); the monoparental family composed only of one of the parents is the second type of family observed (34% of the total). Of this type, the mother-children nucleus is 30% and the father-children nucleus is 4%. A third type of family observed is that of adolescents and young people who live with other relatives, without the presence of their father and mother (16% of the total of families). 1.6 out of every 10 boys (and girls) live without their father and/or mother. In addition to this condition, it is observed that they are large families composed of between 5 and 9 members (59% of the total), which suggests that they face very limiting social and economic conditions; there are even up to 12% of families composed of between 10 and 14 members, which reinforces the previous assertion. The adolescents and young people integrated into EDUEXITO face various risk situations, including limitations in learning, child labor, exposure to physical and psychological violence, exposure to drugs and alcohol, and sexual abuse and early pregnancy. These situations are more pronounced in the communities and/or neighborhoods where they live. The EDUEXITO program aims to strengthen processes of self-esteem, assertive communication, and decision-making to improve knowledge and skills for adolescents and young people to better face their environment. To this end, a baseline study was conducted to determine the situation of risk and life skills of adolescents and young people who will enter EDUEXITO during the 2013-2017 period. The baseline study aimed to determine the situation of risk and life skills of adolescents and young people who will enter EDUEXITO during the 2013-2017 period and to identify the main risks they face to design strategies to improve their capacities to overcome this situation. The study was conducted in five municipalities of the RAAS and included a total of 403 questionnaires, which is a representative sample of the 2,500 beneficiaries who will be incorporated during this period. The study found that the majority of the adolescents and young people integrated into EDUEXITO are women (51% of the total), and the majority of them are indigenous and Afro-descendant (60% of the total). The study also found that the majority of the mothers (49% of the total) of adolescents and young people integrated into EDUEXITO exercise the headship of the households where they live. The study also found that the adolescents and young
