Abstract
Agency for International Development (USAID). The program aims to provide scholarships to Egyptian students to pursue higher education in the United States. As of FY2014, Quarter 1, 146 students from Cohort 1 and Cohort 2 are enrolled in academic programs at LOTUS partner universities. Cohort 1 and Cohort 2 students represent all 27 governorates of Egypt, with a total of 147 students selected through two competitive, nationwide outreach, recruitment, and selection cycles in summer 2010 and summer 2011. The students are pursuing various academic programs, including undergraduate and graduate degrees. The female representation in Cohort 1 and Cohort 2 is 52% and 27%, respectively. In addition to the existing cohorts, 50 new students were selected for Cohort 3 in September 2013. These students are enrolled in the Bridge Year Program at the British University in Egypt (BUE), where they are receiving a suite of essential skills, including English language, computer, research, and study skills. The female representation in Cohort 3 is 28%. During FY2014, Quarter 1, several activities took place to support the LOTUS students and IIE LOTUS. These activities include orientations and team-building retreats for Cohort 3 students, recruitment and hiring of an Academic Advising Manager for Cohort 3, and a visit by Mary C. Ott, USAID mission Director, to welcome the Cohort 3 students at the BUE campus. Additionally, 31 staff members from LOTUS partner Ahram Canadian University attended a seminar on Team Leadership as part of the LOTUS University Capacity Building component. The LOTUS students also participated in various enrichment activities, including the TOEFL ITP exam to assess their English language proficiency, career self-assessment surveys, and career counseling services. A total of 120 Cohort 1 and 2 students and 48 Cohort 3 students took the TOEFL ITP exam, while 40 Cohort 1 students and 8 Cohort 2 students completed the career self-assessment survey. Furthermore, 41 Cohort 1 and 8 Cohort 2 students were offered career counseling services, and 39 Cohort 1 and 2 students attended the second modules of the Misriyati Program. The program's progress is being monitored and evaluated through regular reporting and meetings. The IIE LOTUS team is working closely with the LOTUS partner universities and the USAID mission to ensure the successful implementation of the program. The program's goals and objectives are aligned with the USAID mission to promote economic growth and stability in Egypt through education and training. The LOTUS Scholarship Program is a significant initiative to support the development of Egyptian students and contribute to the country's economic growth and stability. The program's success is dependent on the collaboration and commitment of all stakeholders involved, including the IIE, USAID, LOTUS partner universities, and the Egyptian government.
