Abstract
The course combines self-study and skills development to equip participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide male circumcision services under local anesthesia. The training approach is highly interactive and participatory, with a focus on mastery learning. Mastery learning assumes that all participants can master the required knowledge, attitudes, or skills provided sufficient time is allowed and appropriate training methods are used. The goal of mastery learning is that 100 percent of those being trained will "master" the knowledge and skills on which the training is based. This approach takes into account individual differences in learning styles and abilities, using a variety of teaching and training methods to ensure that participants can learn in the way that best suits them. The course is divided into two main components: self-study and skills development. The self-study component involves participants completing a series of practice exercises and reading reference materials, including the Guide for Participants and the supplement to the reference manual. This component is designed to be completed over a period of 2-4 weeks, allowing participants to work at their own pace and complete the initial portion of the course without disrupting their clinical duties. Once participants have completed the self-study component, they will attend a central location for skills development. This component involves classroom and clinical demonstrations, coaching, and assessment. Participants will work with a trainer to develop their skills and attitudes, and will be tested on the content of the self-learning course. The skills development component is designed to be completed in a shorter period of time than the self-study component, typically over the course of a few days. The mastery learning approach used in this course is competency-based, dynamic, and less stressful than traditional testing methods. Assessment of learning is key to the mastery learning approach, with clinical trainers providing participants with continual feedback on their progress and adapting the course to meet learning needs as necessary. This approach enables participants to have a self-directed learning experience, with the clinical trainer serving as facilitator rather than instructor. The Male Circumcision under Local Anaesthesia training course is designed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide high-quality male circumcision services under local anesthesia. The course combines self-study and skills development to ensure that participants can learn in the way that best suits them, and uses a mastery learning approach to ensure that all participants can master the required knowledge, attitudes, or skills.
