Abstract
Initial assessments identified the need for improved agricultural practices and increased market access in the Eastern Province. To address these challenges, the mission implemented a program focused on farmer training, infrastructure development, and market linkage facilitation. The program aimed to enhance crop yields and improve food security among rural communities. The program's key interventions included training over 2,500 farmers in sustainable agriculture techniques, with a focus on composting and crop rotation methods. Demonstration plots established in 15 communities showed significant yield improvements of 58% when applying the recommended practices. Community feedback indicated strong adoption rates for composting and crop rotation methods, while irrigation techniques faced implementation barriers due to equipment availability. The mission also explored opportunities for collaboration with other organizations and institutions closely related to IBI activities. During a visit to Lisbon, Professors Lis and Marques Mendes took the English examination, and the mission's staff members established contact with Dr. Benjamin Hatz and others involved in the AID/Wharton/Portugal MBA program. The visit also provided an opportunity to discuss general operations with Mr. Fluchman and Mr. Finberg, as well as cooperation between the Purdue and USA projects. The mission played a crucial role in preparing for the monthly meeting of the 3 Institutes held on April 22. The meeting reviewed the general progress of the project and presented details of the IVlliI program. Considerable discussion centered on the problem of official recognition of the extension role of the Institutes. Plans were finalized for the Extension Workshop, with Dr. Pricer and Dr. Frist serving as consultants for the activity. The English training program, which began in January, is nearing its conclusion. The Instituto contracted a professor of English early in the year to provide permanent teaching of both staff and students. However, the professor was unable to fill the position due to illness. The mission is exploring possibilities for obtaining a long-term English teacher from the American Language Service Institute or establishing a permanent branch in Covilhã.
