Abstract
According to data from 2015, a significant proportion of children in this region lack basic reading and writing skills. The literacy rates vary by schooling status, with children who have attended formal school exhibiting higher levels of literacy compared to those who have not received formal education. Literacy rates in the North Central Zone have shown a decline over time, with a comparison of data from 2010 and 2015 revealing a decrease in the percentage of literate children. This trend is observed across various sub-regions within the zone, including by state and by residence. The data also indicate that literacy rates are lower among children from wealthier households, suggesting a potential correlation between socioeconomic status and access to education. The literacy rates for children attending formal school in the North Central Zone are higher compared to those who do not attend school. However, even among school-going children, there is a significant gap in literacy levels between different classes. The data suggest that children in higher classes exhibit higher levels of literacy compared to their counterparts in lower classes. Examples of literacy words and comprehension sentences for children aged 6-16 in the North Central Zone include basic vocabulary such as "Hat, Sit, Room" and sentences like "Do you hear with your arms?" These examples demonstrate the level of literacy skills expected of children in this age group. In addition, examples of math problems for children in this age group include simple arithmetic operations such as 5 - 3 and 9 - 5. The data on literacy rates in the North Central Zone of Nigeria provide valuable insights into the educational challenges faced by children in this region. The findings highlight the need for targeted interventions to improve access to education and enhance literacy skills among children in this area.
