Abstract
However, fewer than 13% of these libraries currently have computers with public access to the internet. This disparity highlights the need for a comprehensive assessment of the physical readiness of public libraries to offer computer and internet services. A key component of this assessment involves procuring and distributing equipment to support internet access. This includes identifying the necessary components of a sustainable professional development system for librarians, which would enable them to effectively utilize and maintain the equipment. The primary training needs of librarians in this context include learning about the technical requirements for internet access, as well as developing the skills necessary to provide training and support to library patrons. The existing capabilities and gaps in library leadership are also critical areas of focus. A strong library community requires strong library leaders who can promote and advocate for libraries, as well as encourage the sharing of innovations throughout the country. To address these gaps, Novateca will establish Regional Training Centers to support librarians' continued professional development. These centers will provide training for all pilot libraries participating in the program, as well as offer public internet access and training. Novateca's partnership with government officials, NGOs, and private sectors is essential for generating momentum to modernize libraries. The program works with librarians at all levels to strengthen their capacity to promote and advocate for libraries, and encourages the sharing of innovations throughout the country. This collaborative approach will promote the increased relevance and importance of libraries to today's Moldovan society, and will help to commit resources to match the new roles of librarians. The Novateca program is made possible through the support of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, in cooperation with the USAID and administered by IREX. The program is part of the Global Libraries initiative, which aims to open the world of knowledge, information, and opportunity to many more people. The initiative is working to transform public libraries into vital resources that can help improve the lives of millions of people.
