Abstract
The Primary Health Care Initiatives (PHCI) Project aims to understand the relationship between occupational hazards and risk of disease or injury. Key health effects of chemical, physical, biological, mechanical, and psychosocial hazards include respiratory diseases, dermatitis, cancers, poisoning, musculoskeletal diseases, reproductive diseases, psychological stresses, hearing loss, eye disorders, and infectious diseases. Primary occupational diseases include respiratory diseases such as bronchitis and pneumoconiosis, dermatitis, cancers associated with chemical exposure and smoking, poisoning, musculoskeletal diseases such as repetitive motion disorder, reproductive diseases including male and female infertility, psychological stresses, hearing loss, eye disorders, and infectious diseases. Occupational accidents can result in disability, death, and significant financial and emotional loss for family and community. Methods of prevention and control include surveying the workplace to identify potential risks and hazards, educating workers and supervisors regarding safe practices, reduction of hazards and risks, protection through safety guards, hearing protection, eye protection, ventilation hoods, cleaning of spills, safety rails, respirators, and protective clothing. Alteration of the work environment through adjustable table and chair heights, ramps, sound insulation, use of lifts and machinery to lift heavy items, and reporting of significant risks to appropriate civil and health authorities are also essential. The prevention and control of occupational health problems require correct identification of occupational health problems, appropriate management of common occupational health problems, and appropriate patient and employer education for prevention of occupational health problems. Healthcare providers play a crucial role in identifying occupational hazards and risks, investigating the causes of occupational health problems, and implementing measures to prevent disease or injury.
