Abstract
The initiative aims to promote sustainable development in areas affected by conflict, improve the competitiveness of the dairy and livestock sectors, and contribute to the country's economic growth. The dairy sector in Colombia faces significant challenges, including high production costs and limited access to markets. The initiative seeks to address these challenges by promoting the use of yuca as a feed supplement for dairy cattle, reducing production costs and improving the quality of milk. The alliance will work in two components: increasing the supply of yuca as a feed supplement and reducing the cost of milk production while improving its quality. The initiative has set ambitious targets, including increasing yuca productivity by 83%, producing 9,000 tons of yuca for processing, and establishing 8 banks of machinery for planting, harvesting, and processing yuca. In the dairy sector, the alliance aims to reduce production costs by 3%, increase milk production by 2,072,000 liters per day, and improve the quality of milk by reducing the bacterial count and somatic cell count. The initiative will focus on 61 municipalities in Antioquia, Córdoba, Cesar, and Sucre, where the majority of the population lives in poverty and faces significant challenges in accessing basic services. The alliance will work with small-scale dairy farmers, providing them with training, technical assistance, and access to markets, with the goal of improving their livelihoods and reducing poverty. The initiative has been designed to address the specific needs of the dairy sector in Colombia, taking into account the country's economic and social context. The alliance will work closely with local stakeholders, including farmers, cooperatives, and government agencies, to ensure the success of the initiative. The implementation of the initiative will be led by COLANTA, which has a strong track record of working with small-scale farmers and promoting sustainable development in rural areas. The alliance will also receive technical and financial support from USAID, which has a long history of working in Colombia to promote economic growth and reduce poverty. The initiative has the potential to make a significant impact on the lives of thousands of people in Colombia, improving their livelihoods and reducing poverty. The alliance will work closely with local stakeholders to ensure the success of the initiative and to promote sustainable development in the dairy sector.
