Abstract
The initiative aims to promote sustainable development in areas affected by conflict, improving the competitiveness of the dairy and agricultural sectors, and contributing to the development goals established in the CDCS 2014-2018 of USAID/Colombia. The initiative focuses on two main components: the supply of yuca as an input for the production of balanced feed for cattle, and the reduction of the cost of milk production and improvement of quality standards. The yuca supply component aims to provide a legal source of income for farmers and offer them technical assistance in the application of efficient production processes, installation of productive infrastructure, and supply of technical assistance. The second component aims to reduce the cost of milk production and improve quality standards through technical assistance and technological improvements. The initiative has achieved significant progress in the first year of operation, with activities implemented in 54 municipalities out of the 61 target municipalities. In the yuca component, 38% of the target municipalities (12 out of 31) have been intervened, while in the milk component, 89% of the target municipalities (52 out of 58) have been intervened through various strategies. In the yuca component, 288.8 hectares have been planted, with 64 hectares intervened in Caucasia (Antioquia), a priority municipality for the alliance. In the milk component, the establishment of the cost of production per liter of milk for the baseline and measurements in different zones has been a priority task of technical assistance with producers. The initiative has also made progress in the establishment of the service of pasture renewal, with 177.2 hectares of pastures renewed in the first year, exceeding the target of 100 hectares. The alliance has also advanced in the consolidation of its Agrodat@ monitoring system and the updating and migration of information contained in the Colanta intranet to the application. Additionally, 80 professionals, including technical assistants and promoters, are being trained. The plan of work for the second year (2019-2020) provides details of the key activities to be developed in both components, as well as the different transversal activities to be executed during this period. The plan aims to build on the progress made in the first year and achieve the objectives of the alliance, contributing to the development of the conditions of life of the beneficiaries in the second year. The initiative has a geographic focus on the Bajo Cauca region, with a priority on the municipalities of Caucasia (Antioquia), Sahagún, Ciénaga de Oro, Pueblo Nuevo, Montería, Cereté, Corozal, Sampués, and Agustín Codazzi. The initiative also aims to benefit 500 households directly through the yuca component and 7,000 households through the milk component.
