Abstract
The reserve is administered by the Fundación Omacha, which has been working on conservation and education efforts since 2004. The reserve is part of the Sistema Nacional de Áreas Protegidas (SINAP) of Parques Nacionales Naturales de Colombia, with the goal of preserving and restoring the natural resources and biodiversity of the area. The reserve is composed of three main properties: Pañuelo, La Campana, and Morrocoy. The properties were initially consolidated as a Unidad Agrícola Familiar (UAF) in 2007, and later expanded through two comodatos to include additional land. The reserve is currently working towards consolidating a single large reserve that will generate a greater impact on conservation. The reserve has been affiliated with the Red Colombiana de Reservas Naturales de la Sociedad Civil (RESNATUR) since 2004, and has been involved in various projects and alliances with other organizations. The reserve is also part of the Reserva de Biosfera del Tuparro and the Grupo Inter-institucional Facilitador (GIF). The reserve's management plan is based on three main approaches: conservation, restoration, and sustainable use. The conservation approach is the primary strategy for ensuring the structure and functionality of the ecosystems over time. The reserve also emphasizes the importance of social ties and community involvement in its conservation efforts. The reserve's management plan was developed in accordance with the "Guía para la elaboración de planes de manejo de reservas Naturales de la Sociedad Civil" (Guide for the development of management plans for Natural Reserves of the Civil Society), which was created in 2009 by Parques Nacionales Naturales de Colombia, RESNATUR, Corporación Autónoma Regional del Valle del Cauca (CVC), and Asociación Red de Reservas Naturales de la Sociedad Civil del Macizo Colombiano (SERANKWA). The reserve's management plan includes several key components, including a characterization and analysis of the reserve's current situation, a zoning plan that outlines permitted, limited, and prohibited uses, and a plan for the conservation and restoration of the reserve's ecosystems. The plan also emphasizes the importance of sustainable use and the equitable use of resources without generating pressure on the environment. The reserve's management plan is a critical tool for ensuring the long-term conservation and sustainability of the reserve's ecosystems and natural resources. The plan provides a framework for the reserve's management and conservation efforts, and will help to ensure the reserve's continued importance as a protected area in Colombia.
