Abstract
The project is executed in 12 municipalities of the departments of Quiché, Totonicapán, and Quetzaltenango in the Western highlands of Guatemala. The project's objective is to improve the competitiveness of the selected value chains, including horticulture, coffee, and handicrafts. To achieve this, the project focuses on six main components: improving the competitiveness of value chains, expanding participation in rural value chains, improving agricultural productivity, expanding markets and commercialization through private sector innovation, increasing the productivity of crops for self-consumption and improving food utilization, and improving the competitiveness of handicraft value chains. The project's geographic focus is on 12 municipalities in the departments of Quiché, Totonicapán, and Quetzaltenango, with a total budget of US$23,000,000. The project period is from May 28, 2012, to June 30, 2017. The project's implementation is led by AGEXPORT, with the support of various sub-grantees, including Save the Children, Rainforest Alliance, and INCAP. The project's methodology is based on the Business Chain Methodology (Metodología de Encadenamientos Empresariales), which aims to improve the competitiveness of value chains through the development of business skills and the creation of market opportunities. The project also focuses on the empowerment of women and the improvement of food security and nutrition. The project's indicators include the number of families participating in the value chains, the increase in household income, and the improvement in food security and nutrition. The project's monitoring and evaluation plan is outlined in the document, with a focus on tracking progress and making adjustments as needed. The project's budget for the period from October 1, 2012, to September 30, 2013, is US$4,325,000. The budget is allocated across the six components, with a focus on improving the competitiveness of value chains, expanding participation in rural value chains, and improving agricultural productivity. The project's implementation is expected to have a positive impact on the rural communities, improving their incomes and food security. The project's success will depend on the effective implementation of the six components and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances.
