Abstract
The project aims to improve maternal and child health, as well as reproductive health, in over 150 rural and peri-urban communities across the regions of Ucayali, San Martín, Ayacucho, Huánuco, and Lima. The project's methodology focuses on empowering individuals to take care of their health, adopting healthy behaviors, strengthening community leadership and management of health and development, articulating local actors, using community-based information, and formulating public investment projects to improve health and its determinants. The project also developed a toolkit, known as the "Caja de Herramientas para tener Familias, Comunidades y Municipios Saludables," which provides self-instructional materials to help families, community leaders, authorities, and officials achieve healthy families, communities, and municipalities. The project's strategy is based on the "Familias, Comunidades y Municipios Saludables" approach, which involves a series of steps to achieve a healthy family, community, and municipality. This includes creating a family vision board, setting family commitments, and establishing norms of family coexistence. The project also emphasizes the importance of community participation in activities such as meetings, assemblies, and community work. The project has made significant progress in improving health outcomes in the target communities. According to the project's reports, there has been a notable increase in the use of family planning methods, a reduction in the number of children under 2 years old who are malnourished, and an improvement in the number of pregnant women who receive prenatal care. The project has also worked with local authorities and institutions to transfer its methodology and tools to them, enabling them to continue the project's work after its completion. This has included training local leaders and officials in the use of the project's toolkit and providing them with the necessary resources to implement the project's strategies. The project's success has been recognized by various stakeholders, including the Peruvian government and international organizations. The project's approach has been praised for its effectiveness in improving health outcomes and its ability to empower local communities to take ownership of their health and development. The project's impact has been felt not only in the target communities but also in the broader region. The project's approach has been replicated in other parts of Peru, and its methodology has been adopted by other organizations working in the field of health and development. Overall, the project "Municipios y Comunidades Saludables II" has made significant contributions to improving health outcomes in Peru, particularly in rural and peri-urban communities. Its approach has been recognized as effective and sustainable, and its impact is expected to continue long after the project's completion.
