Abstract
Since 2013, Power Africa has contributed to providing electricity for the first time to over 165.4 million people across sub-Saharan Africa. The projects supported by Power Africa produce over 6,500 MW of new, cleaner, and more reliable electricity, helping to mitigate climate change and end energy poverty. In 2021, the renewable energy projects supported by Power Africa allowed for the avoidance of 7.7 million tonnes of CO2 emissions, equivalent to the combustion of 8.5 billion pounds of coal. Power Africa's objectives include adding over 30,000 MW of cleaner and more reliable electricity capacity, connecting 60 million new households and businesses to electricity by 2030, and improving the lives of over 590 million people by promoting health, education, and prosperity. To achieve these objectives, Power Africa works with African governments, the private sector, international organizations, NGOs, and bilateral and multilateral donors to stimulate investment in sub-Saharan Africa's energy sector. Power Africa's approach is defined by its focus on transactions, on-the-ground support, working beyond the grid, addressing financing gaps, and driving African-led reform. Power Africa's approach to transactions involves addressing critical obstacles that hinder the progress of a particular transaction, creating a multiplier effect for other transactions facing similar problems in the country. The partnership provides on-the-ground support through its country-based advisors, who identify the technical, financial, and policy solutions necessary to facilitate faster access to electricity. Power Africa also works beyond the grid, engaging with investors and partners to find solutions to energy access at scale and off-grid. The partnership aims to reduce investment risks to enable public and private investors to finance projects that promote systemic reforms. Power Africa's priorities include ending energy poverty, accelerating a carbon-free future, stimulating innovation in the US and African private sectors, and promoting women's empowerment. The partnership has supported over 70 transactions, with 76% of financially closed transactions based on renewable energy technologies. Power Africa has deployed over 40 transaction advisors and integrated advisors in 20 countries, provided electricity assistance to 145 countries, and connected over 34.6 million new businesses to electricity. The partnership has also helped to avoid over 7.7 million tonnes of CO2 emissions annually and has enabled over 165.4 million people to access electricity for the first time.
