Abstract
Since 2013, Power Africa has contributed to providing electricity for the first time to nearly 200 million people across sub-Saharan Africa. The projects supported by Power Africa produce nearly 7,600 MW of new, cleaner, and more reliable electricity, helping to mitigate climate change and end energy poverty. In 2023, the renewable energy projects supported by Power Africa allowed for the avoidance of over 10 million tonnes of CO2 emissions, equivalent to removing more than 2.2 million gasoline-powered cars from the road for a year. The partnership aims to add over 30,000 MW of new, cleaner, and more reliable electricity capacity, connect 60 million new households and businesses to electricity by 2030, and improve the lives of over 590 million people by promoting health, education, and prosperity. Power Africa works with African governments, the private sector, international organizations, NGOs, and bilateral and multilateral donors to stimulate investment in sub-Saharan Africa's energy sector. The partnership's approach is defined by its focus on transactions, on-the-ground support, working beyond the grid, addressing financing gaps, and driving African-led reform. Power Africa's approach to transactions involves addressing critical obstacles that hinder the progress of a particular transaction, creating a multiplier effect for other transactions facing similar problems in the country. The partnership's on-the-ground support involves identifying technical, financial, and policy solutions necessary to facilitate faster access to electricity. Power Africa also works beyond the grid, engaging investors and partners in the search for small-scale, off-grid renewable energy solutions, allowing millions of people to access reliable and sustainable electricity for the first time. The partnership aims to reduce investment risks to enable public and private investors to finance projects that promote systemic reforms. Power Africa works with African governments to address critical skill gaps, drive reforms, and build and maintain electricity sectors for future generations. The partnership also prioritizes the empowerment of women, supporting projects, programs, and policies that aim to reduce gender inequalities and promote the engagement of men and women. As of 2023, Power Africa has supported over 14,300 MW of new, cleaner, and more reliable electricity capacity, with 7,600 MW of this capacity already in operation. The partnership has also facilitated the closure of financing for 14,300 MW of electricity projects, with 7,600 MW of this capacity already in operation.
