Abstract
MCSP supports programming in maternal, newborn, and child health, immunization, family planning and reproductive health, nutrition, health systems strengthening, water/sanitation/hygiene, malaria, prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV, and pediatric HIV care and treatment. MCSP approaches these issues through household and community mobilization, gender integration, and digital health, among others. The MCSP report is made possible by the generous support of the American people through the USAID under the terms of the Cooperative Agreement AID-OAA-A-14-00028. The contents are the responsibility of the MCSP and do not necessarily reflect the views of USAID or the United States Government. Pre-Service Education Standards for Medical Laboratory Technician Programs in Liberia were developed to ensure that students receive high-quality education and training. The standards are divided into four areas: Student, Clinical Sites, Curriculum, and Faculty (including Tutors, Preceptors, and Clinical Instructors). Each area has multiple standards that outline the requirements for medical laboratory technician education programs. The Student area has standards that cover topics such as student admission, academic progression, and graduation requirements. Standard 1 (S1) requires that students meet the minimum admission requirements, including a high school diploma or equivalent. Standard 2 (S2) outlines the academic progression requirements, including completion of a minimum number of credit hours. The Clinical Sites area has standards that cover topics such as clinical site selection, site evaluation, and site accreditation. Standard 1 (S1) requires that clinical sites meet the minimum requirements for accreditation. Standard 2 (S2) outlines the site evaluation process, including on-site visits and review of site documentation. The Curriculum area has standards that cover topics such as curriculum development, curriculum implementation, and curriculum evaluation. Standard 1 (S1) requires that the curriculum be developed in consultation with stakeholders, including healthcare professionals and industry experts. Standard 2 (S2) outlines the curriculum implementation process, including the use of instructional materials and teaching methods. The Faculty area has standards that cover topics such as faculty qualifications, faculty training, and faculty evaluation. Standard 1 (S1) requires that faculty members meet the minimum qualifications, including a degree in a relevant field. Standard 2 (S2) outlines the faculty training process, including orientation and professional development opportunities. The School Infrastructure and Management area has standards that cover topics such as school infrastructure, school management, and school governance. Standard 1 (S1) requires that the school have adequate infrastructure, including classrooms, laboratories, and equipment. Standard 2 (S2) outlines the school management process, including the use of policies and procedures to ensure effective management. The standards outlined in this document are designed to ensure that medical laboratory technician education programs in Liberia meet the minimum requirements for quality and effectiveness. By implementing these standards, programs can provide students with the knowledge, skills, and competencies needed to succeed in the field of medical laboratory technology.
