Abstract
The assessment aimed to develop profiles and conduct capacity need assessments of processing units producing industrial products like pulps/purees and/or juice concentrates across Pakistan. The survey covered technology, quality assurance, marketing, and human resource functions of the surveyed units. The assessment identified possible areas of support where USAID support can bring improvements in operations and marketing of the surveyed units. The project rationale emphasized the need to enhance the competitiveness of the fruits/vegetables pulping sector in Pakistan. The methodology of the study involved a structured questionnaire to survey processing units across Pakistan. The survey aimed to gather information on the production volumes, key features, and trends of the pulping sector. The assessment covered the types of fruits/vegetables processing units, estimated production volumes, and key features/trends of the pulping sector. The sector overview and key features highlighted the location of processing facilities in fruit/vegetable production clusters, diminishing competitive advantage, capital-intensive business, lack of product diversification, local market for pulping units, export market for pulping units, and pulp imports. The assessment revealed that the pulping sector in Pakistan faces significant challenges, including a lack of competitiveness, limited product diversification, and dependence on imports. The comparative profiling of pulping units included a survey of 13 processing units in Punjab, which were assessed based on their technology, quality assurance, marketing, and human resource functions. The assessment revealed that the surveyed units faced challenges in terms of technology, quality assurance, and marketing. The capacity profile of fruits/vegetables pulping units showed that the province-wise capacities varied significantly, with Punjab having the highest capacity. The individual profiles of surveyed pulping units provided detailed information on the technology, quality assurance, marketing, and human resource functions of each unit. The profiles highlighted the strengths and weaknesses of each unit, providing a comprehensive understanding of the pulping sector in Pakistan. The assessment revealed that the surveyed units faced challenges in terms of technology, quality assurance, and marketing, and that there was a need for support to enhance their competitiveness. The rating of the surveyed units showed that the units were rated based on their performance in terms of technology, quality assurance, marketing, and human resource functions. The assessment revealed that the units faced challenges in terms of technology, quality assurance, and marketing, and that there was a need for support to enhance their competitiveness. The assessment provided a comprehensive understanding of the pulping sector in Pakistan, highlighting the challenges faced by the sector and the need for support to enhance its competitiveness. The assessment provided recommendations for USAID support to improve the operations and marketing of the surveyed units, with a focus on enhancing their technology, quality assurance, and marketing functions.
